Consularis Cretae
In the time of Constantine the Great, Crete was annexed to the administrative district of Illyricum. Following the permanent division of the Roman Empire, the island fell within the Eastern part, which gradually became the Byzantine Empire. In the 6th century it was a province in its own right, governed by an officer bearing the title of Consularis. He was based in Gortyn, which clearly remained the island capital.
