The last emir
Abd Al-Aziz, Emir of Crete, was led with his family to Constantinople, where their arrival greatly impressed the populace. The Emir lived out the rest of his days on public lands granted to him by the Byzantines, but never converted to Christianity and thus remained ineligible for public office. In contrast, his son embraced the Christian faith and served the Emperor, becoming known by the Hellenised name Anemas. He was killed in battle against the Russians under Svyatoslav in 972.
