Cretan salt
On completing his missionary activity on Crete, St. Nicon Metanoeite ("Repent") set sail for the Peloponnese, taking a small parcel of Cretan salt with him. The fact that the saint held this "glimmering, snow-white" commodity in great estimation, keeping such a close guard over it throughout the journey, almost led to a tragic misunderstanding. A number of Nicon's fellow travellers got the impression that the parcel contained some kind of treasure, and decided to rob him. The misunderstanding was eventually cleared up and the saint continued on his way, carrying the Cretan salt with him.
