A Turkish Township Opposite Chandax
Lightning counter attacks mounted by the guard at Chandax forced Deli Hussein, commander of the Ottoman army, to build a fort at Marathitis (in the area now known as Fortezza) so as to protect the Turkish camp. Great care was taken over the stronghold, which was named Inadiye or Nova Candia. An entire Ottoman township complete with houses, storehouses, mosques and Muslim monasteries grew up in and around the fortress, from which the artillery could bombard Chandax.

"In the interior of the strong castle there are five hundred stone houses... arsenals and storehouses... the Sultan Ibrahim Mosque, one of the six in the town, is made of stone and has six small domes."
