An Ottoman Account of the Battles

"The infidels began to rain down cannonballs and explosives. Bells, bugles, conches and church organs could be heard night and day, and all the battlements and bastions on the wall shone with lamps burning pitch. Even the inside of the ditch was lit by such lamps, suspended on chains. Our men fought on with all their heart, beating war drums... they dug mines and made assaults on the trenches, yelling the name of God. .".
