The Burning of Viannos
In the summer of 1943, the Viannos area was the centre of operations for guerrillas in the resistance group led by Manolis Bandouvas. The annihilation of a German garrison, followed two days later by an attack on a convoy in the same region, were to lead to German reprisals.

In the acts of revenge and horrifying vandalism that followed on 14th September, the villages in the district were razed to the ground, hundreds of civilians executed and hostages taken.
