Resistance Fighters Enter the Town
"...A procession of cars and guerrillas on foot was immediately formed and entered the town. In the first car was Andreas Nathenas, Military Commander, with his adjutant Captain Georgios Kavos. In the second was Kapetan [guerrilla leader] Georgios Petrakogiorgis with two members of his band. In the third was Kapetan Michalis Xylouris - Christomichalis with two members of his band. In the fourth, members of the Satanas group from Kroussonas..... Ioannis Podias, head of the Greek Popular Liberation Army [Greek ELAS] entered Heraklion through the New Gate, on horseback, and was followed by the ELAS band and the battalions in the 43rd regiment of ELAS. ...From the area around the Three Arches (Eleftherias Square) came Kapetan Manolis Bandouvas with the bands headed by Nikolaos Bandouvas and Anastassios Boutzalis... From the Lazaretto Gate, Nikos Plevris and Yiannis Bandouvas entered Eleftherias Square with their bands...".
