Demonstrations
On 17th June 1934, grape growers held a mass demonstration in the town. Tension came to head in 1935, during nationwide industrial action by the working class over pay, social security insurance and hours; in Heraklion, a public meeting held by sultana workers on 5th August turned into a battle between the demonstrators and the army and police, who had no hesitation in shooting to kill. The toll was terrible: ten workers were killed and at least thirty injured.
