The First Apartment Block
Combined with the use of new materials, modern trends in architecture radically altered the face of building activity. In 1926 work began on the Fytakis Mansion, owned by citron merchants Fytakis and Kasapakis, on a site next to the earlier Venetian Sampionara Bastion. This first modern apartment block was completed in 1930. Its size and position, by the new port, rendered it the hallmark of the town over the years to come.
