The historic School of St. Catherine's in Chandax, which operated from the 15th century onwards, was a versatile establishment with departments specializing in grammar, logic, rhetoric, mathematics, art, music and so on. Graduates included well-known Cretans who distinguished themselves in literature, the arts and the church. Outstanding among their number were Patriarch Kyrillos Loukaris, Patriarch Meletios Pigas and Bishop Maximos Margounios.
