Once responsibility for the building lay with the Municipality, restoration work began in 1956, on the initiative of the Society of Cretan Historical Studies, with funding coming from the Archaeological Service.

The restoration was completed in 1961, after which the church housed a collection of copies of Cretan Byzantine murals.

As one of the finest monuments adorning the town, St. Mark's now houses the Municipal Art Gallery, and is occasionally used as a venue for concerts, lectures and temporary exhibitions.
