The Mediterranean diet
As specialists stress, the peoples of the Mediterranean are particularly privileged in terms of their diet. They are able to consume olive oil, which is regarded as the ideal source of fat in a healthy, balanced diet, on account of the monounsaturated fatty acids, vitamin E and other substances it contains.

Inhabitants of Mediterranean countries also consume large amounts of wholemeal bread, which is rich in nutrients and fibre, important in the prevention of bowel cancer. Added to this, the abundance of fruit, wine and vegetables they can enjoy contain antioxidants, which lower cholesterol levels and protect cells from ageing.
