The towns

The following Cretan towns are recorded in Hierocles' "Synekdemo", which appeared in 535 AD: Metropolis Gortyne, Inatos, Viena, Ierapetra, Kamara, Alyggos, Chersonesos, Lyktos, Arkadia, Knossos, Souvritos, Oaxios, Eleutherna, Lampai, Aptera, Kydonia, Kissamos, Kantania, Elyros, Lissos, Phoiniki or Aradena". The island of Gavdos appears as the 22^nd town. A further 10 settlements are known to us from other sources; it is considered that still others must have existed on the island in the 6^th century.
