Fishing
Fish farming of sorts in specially built tanks is testified in the late Roman period, with fish being regarded as a staple food. The only information we have on fishing in the Byzantine period comes from an Arab source: in early May every year, the islanders would fish large quantities of tuna from the enormous shoals that arrived in the waters off Crete.
