Dioceses
In the second Byzantine period, frequent changes were made to the structure of the Cretan Church. For example, the dioceses of Herakleion, Finikas and Kandanos were abolished, while the names of others changed: the diocese of Lambi was renamed Kalamon. Still other dioceses retained their name, but the seat was transferred to a different town, as was the case with the diocese of Chersonissos, Sitia and Arkadia. This gave rise to the name Episkopi (or derivates thereof, such as Piskopiano) used for several villages on the island.
