Armenians
In 1363, approximately two thousand Armenians who had been displaced from the shores of the Black Sea gained permission from the Venetian authorities to settle on Crete. For the most part they came to the island's towns, where they were granted land to build houses on. In Chandax, where the majority probably settled, they were also given the well known "Armenian church".
