The Grand Lord
As one of the leading figures in Cretan medieval history, Alexis Callergis was a typical representative of a turbulent era fraught with danger. His tactics were opportunistic in nature, since on some occasions he would co-operate with the Venetians and on others he would rise up against them, as in 1282, when he led the longest and fiercest revolution against Venetian domination, which lasted for 17 years, up to 1299. Further indicative of Kallergis' stance is the fact that his family was the only one on Crete to be granted Venetian nobility titles.
