The Saint Titus Republic
On 7th May 1364 the Venetian fleet approached Crete and landed a strong military force on the beach at Palekastro, west of Chandax. Their mission was to quash a rebellion by Venetian feudal lords which had broken out in August of the previous year. At the time, the rebels had overthrown the official Venetian authorities and declared Crete an independent republic under the protection of St. Titus. The Venetian response was harsh; the expeditionary force overcame the revolutionaries, the Serenissimi's power over the island was restored and exemplary punishment was meted out to the rebels.
