Schools
From as early as the 14th century, schools teaching Greek, Latin and Italian to the children of mainly well-to-do families were operating in Chandax. One noteworthy example is that of a Greek school founded in Chandax after the fall of Constantinople, on the initiative of Cardinal Vissarion, who was of Greek descent. The early 16th century saw the addition of a Latin school with a teacher paid by the Venetian state. Education was offered free of charge in both cases. Of course, pupils did not always feel undying affection for the school environment:
On the quills and books and all I trod
For school seemed to me a savage beast
