Venetian - Turkish Wars
From the early 15th century on, Ottoman expansion westward posed a threat to Venetian interests in the Eastern Mediterranean. The Venetians had played an active part in the desperate attempts to defend Constantinople; the fall of the city heralded a new era in Venetian-Turkish relations, characterised by frequent alternations between war and peace. The first Venetian-Turkish war was officially declared on 28th July 1463. A further six were to follow until the early 18th century, all centred on the Eastern Mediterranean, particularly in the area that is now Greece.
