The Greek State is Founded
On 3rd February 1830, representatives of Britain, France and Russia gathered in London to sign a protocol recognizing an independent Greek state. Known as "The Protocol of Independence", this document is regarded as the founding act of the Modern Greek state, which included the Peloponnese, Evia, the Cyclades, the Sporades and the mainland south of a line extending from the Ambracian Gulf in the west to Evia in the east. Its total area was approximately 47 000 square kilometers, with a population of about 750 000. Thenceforwards, the union of Crete with Greece was the rallying cry and principal objective of all Cretan insurrections.
