Theatre Performances
The Heraklion public showed a keen interest in theatricals and concerts. Well known contemporary troupes, such as those owned by Evangelia Paraksevopoulou and Marika Kotopouli, put on European comedies, operettas and melodramas at the Kallithea Theatre (the later Apollo Cinema on Dikeosinis Avenue). The same venue was used for choral evenings, piano recitals, performances by mandolin orchestras and dance evenings organised by the town's Young Ladies' and Women's Association. From 1911 onwards, films were also shown at the Kallithea.
