A Few Remain

A 1925-6 business directory records several Muslim professionals working in Heraklion, such as merchants Ahmet Dheliverakis, Ibrahim Katsoulakis, Hussein Baritakis, doctor and chemist Pertev Moulatzades and grocer Mehmet Dheliorakis. In the 1928 census there were 197 Muslims living on Crete, 20 of whom were in Heraklion. In addition, there were 565 Turkish subjects, 340 of whom were recorded in the Municipality of Heraklion.
