In the New Homeland
In Turkey, the Ministry of Settlement was set up in 1923 to receive and rehabilitate refugees. Upon their arrival, Muslim refugees were inoculated and then given a health check. They were temporarily accommodated in a range of buildings, just like the Greek exchangees, before bring granted property left behind by the Greeks.

In their new homelands, the "Turkish Cretans" maintained several traits, such as the Cretan dialect and music, looking back on Crete with nostalgia. Even to this day, several of their descendants keep the memory and customs of their forebears alive.
