Protests
In the beginning, local society including Muslim townsfolk looked with sympathy on the refugees arriving in the town. But as their number increased, protests and complaints began to be voiced (Nea Efimeris ["New Newspaper"], 30-10-1922), particularly by those landlords whose property had been requisitioned to temporarily accommodate the refugees. Dissatisfaction grew on account of an observable increase in crime, mainly involving petty theft.
