The Railway

When we came to Heraklion in 1926 there was a railway. The station was where the car park in the old vegetable market now is, opposite the Natural History Museum. There were three trains: Minos, Ariadne and Theseus. The trains carried stone blocks and rubble from Rodia to Heraklion. There's a big fault in the ground on the Kefaloyiannis heath by Gazi, and that's what the harbour was built from. As kids at the time, we would put nails on the tracks to flatten them and then use them as fasteners for shadow theatre figures...
