The Smithies (Tin Pan Alley)

The smithies were all in 1821 St. and in Karterou alley. When I was a kid I would go and spend hours gazing at all the cooking pots, which were all made by hand in those days. It was an amazing sight - as kids we would sit and enjoy it, watching the craftsmen at work, shaping their creations and decorating them with amazingly accurate designs. Pots, frying pans, saucepans...

They were amazing pots - once the craftsmen had made them they would tin-plate them to prevent poisoning. Then they had to cover all of the outside in patterns, made by tapping lightly to make dots. Imagine the curved side of a pot with a dot in the middle surrounded by concentric circles, all made by hand, with a small hammer the craftsman held and tapped rhythmically - tap, tap, tap - without a single flaw!

We would sit watching for hours...
