Sometimes young men would give love notes with their phone numbers or a particular time for a date. I once remember coming back from swimming on the bus together with a friend. She was a bit of a lively young thing, and a young officer gave her a scrap of paper. "What's that he gave you?" I asked her. And she replied that he had asked her for a date. "And are you going to go?" I asked her again.
