Sewing machines and pianos

Nor will I ever forget certain other things that happened.

I remember that when the Germans first came, they took all the sewing machines and pianos out of people's houses. One day I saw some German trucks full of sewing machines. And pianos, but they didn't take ours because we kept it covered up in the storeroom. It would have been difficult for them to take it upstairs, so we managed to save it.

Another thing is that when the Germans were leaving Heraklion, I remember them going round the shops and asking for gold so as not to blow us up... My daddy, who had been to Africa ten years earlier, had this big five sovereign piece, and he gave it to them.
