Cultural Life in the Town

In the interwar years, quality literary magazines were published in Heraklion: Thaleia Kaliyianni produced the Kritikes Selides ("Cretan Pages"), Lefteris Alexiou the Kastro, Minas Dimakis the Fylla Technis ("Art Pages"). Interesting lectures were held in the Scholars' Club. Good concerts and plays were also held in the Poulakakis Theatre. Leading actors and artists like Kotopouli and Mitropoulos came to Crete to perform. The hub of intellectual life was the Heraklion Museum, under directors Marinatos and Platonas, and later the Society of Cretan Historical Studies and the Historical Museum, with the circle around Menelaos Parlamas and Andreas Kalokairinos, publisher of the renowned periodical Kritika Chronika ("Cretan Chronicles"). Highly significant publications were produced by Stergios Spanakis, in his Monuments of Cretan History; by Lefteris Platakis, in the various studies published in his periodical Cretologia; and by Alexiou and Aposkitou, who published works of the Cretan Renaissance.
