Heraklion took in the refugees warmly - the Cretans welcomed them - but the refugees had lots of things to offer them too. Over here the Cretans had no idea of what vineyards were. They only had them for making wine.
When the refugees came, they scattered all over Crete. And they were given property. Not all that many refugees came to Heraklion. There were only a few, most of them went to the villages. Most of them that came to Heraklion were town dwellers, who were given money and bought houses.
