The largest cistern in Chandax, holding 2000 tuns, was built adjoining the Arsenali Nuovi so as to serve the port. The cistern consists of two oblong vaulted chambers linked by arched openings. Light and air enter the cisterns through large light shafts in the top of the vaults.
