Under both Venetian and Ottoman rule, the fountain was of vital importance to the townsfolk; great efforts were made and large sums spent to ensure that it provided a constant water supply and was properly maintained.
The area around the fountain is now a modern oasis for those seeking respite from the frenetic pace of everyday life.
