After the Muslims departed under the terms of the 1922 population exchange, St. Mark's fell into disuse. Once refurbished it operated as the Minoa Cinema for several years, and then, up until the mid-1950s, as a warehouse. It was at this time that the building was declared unsafe and only narrowly avoided being demolished.
From 1930 to 1956 the Basilica of St. Mark housed the Minoa Cinema (Kostas Schizakis Collection)
