Unfortunately, no clear-cut historical references to the size or layout of the initial fortified settlement in Roman or Early Christian times have come down to us, nor have any building remains survived.

That being said, the town of Kastro - the Byzantine generic term for a fortified city or position - was most probably protected by an enceinte consisting merely of towers and vertical crenellated walls, as contemporary technology dictated.
