The ornate marble threshold from the main portal in the Franciscan friary was immured in the north (main) entrance to the barracks, which is now the courthouse door. The friary stood on the site now occupied by Archaeological Museum, but collapsed in a major earthquake in 1856. The magnificent portal had been donated to the monastery by Pope Alexander V, who hailed from Merambello in Lassithi and had once been a monk there.
