The Voltone Gate stood at the southern extremity of the Venetian Ruga Maistra, now known as 25th August St. It linked the old Arab and Byzantine town to the hinterland and the burghi or suburbs, once the town had begun to expand beyond the walls.

West of the Voltone Gate, a further large building complex extended to the northwest. This was the Venetian fondaco or grain warehouse. The Quartieri Italiani or Italian Barracks were built on from this, to the south of what is now Chandakos St.

The entire western end of the granary gate up to Tagmatarchou Tzoulaki St. has been demolished; the site is now occupied by shops, offices, public services, the police headquarters and the traffic police headquarters. Traces of vaults are still visible on Chandakos St., where they have been incorporated into newer buildings.
