The choice of a site for the Armeria was of vital significance, since it had to be located in the immediate vicinity of the island's military headquarters.

The Armeria consisted of three sections: the original building of limited dimensions, and extensions added on over time by Venetian officials Natale Dona, I. Corner and A. Grimani. These modifications were deemed necessary to accommodate the arms that the Venetians kept on the island.

Natale Dona's addition to the original building (1578-1582) extended from the east side of the building towards St. Titus Square, and was named the Donata in his honour. The west section was built by Corner and Grimani.

It would appear that the Armeria contained a small chapel dedicated to St. Nicholas, which appears on General R. Werdmüller's map of Candia and is mentioned by G. Gerola.
