According to the description given by Evlia Çelebi, this was Kiopruli's residence after the fall of Chandax - a grand, imposing three storey edifice of large dimensions which towered over other buildings in the area and had a view out to sea. It collapsed twice in earthquakes. Following the 1856 quake it was rebuilt on a somewhat smaller scale and became the Pasha's Gate, serving as administrative headquarters and the residence of several pashas.
