Ordained in 1409, Pope Alexander X, also known as Peter the Cretan, Petros Philargos or Philaretos was drawn from the ranks of the Franciscan friars.

The Cretan pontiff sent lavish altar furnishings to the friary church and had a large arch-shaped chapel built, on which his family coat of arms was placed. He also had a large gate of finest marble sent from Rome.
