The main commercial street (now the central market in 1866 St.) extended from the Meindani (fruit and vegetable market) via the Voltone Gate to St. Mark's Square, linked two squares closely associated with political and religious authority. In Venetian times, official religious processions and parades set out in pomp and splendour from the Church of St. Titus, headed to San Salvatore and ended up at St. Mark's, where the liturgy was celebrated.
